Special Characteristics of Curriculum

English Language

United Christian College (Kowloon East) offers an exciting and attractive English Language curriculum on entry in S.1 that builds on students!| past knowledge of English while enabling learners to expand into the realms of language arts and literature in English. The former provides an enriching experience for students!| involvement in various genres, i.e. novels, poetry, debate and social concern that are language based in preparation for the TSA, SBA and challenges of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS). The latter facilitates learners with the scope of literary appreciation of human works that develop a humanistic outlook on life portraying diverse human thought, emotions and experience.

Both language arts and literature in English challenge students with the opportunity to consider the Christian perspective in association with values and attitudes, critical thinking, collaborative skills and cultural enjoyment while targeting language enhancement.

The English Department at UCCKE aims to establish a concrete curriculum framework, engage in curriculum planning and incorporate pedagogy and assessment through the use of learning and teaching resources with the support of specialists from the Curriculum Development Institute (CDI), an advisory arm of the Education, Bureau (EDB) in preparing students to excel in both the language arts and non-language arts electives of the NSS.

Music

UCCKE encourages students to appreciate music by requiring students to learn at least one musical instrument. All S.1 to S.3 students must choose a string instrument to play in class. There is no pre-requisite for taking the music class. The music teacher coaches a variety of string instruments. Each class is a string ensemble as students may choose from violin, viola, cello and bass.
Performance technique, music theory, ear training and music appreciation are all learning goals that can be achieved through the study of music ranging from the Baroque to the Romantic period. Students showcase their performance playing solo on an instrument, in an ensemble and as an accompanist.

Japanese

The main purpose of including a foreign language in the school curriculum is to widen the global view of students at a very young age. The three-year introductory Japanese course equips students with a brief understanding of the Japanese language and how it is applied in various scenarios. The syllabus covers the basic pronunciation of Japanese syllables, daily conversations, short articles and stories. Students are exposed to various graded listening, reading and writing exercises. Games, songs and video clips are supplements to motivate and sustain their interests. In order to attend to students' individual needs, tailor made audio recordings are uploaded to the school intranet for students to access outside their class time.

French Language

United Christian College (Kowloon East) offers an interesting French Language curriculum for S.1 to S.3 students. !¥Voyage 1!| is the textbook we use. This programme aims at developing students!| interests in learning the French language. There are different focuses in each form. In S.1, the students are able to grasp the basic French language e.g. greetings, date, gender and numbers.
