Unique Arrangement a. All academic subjects including Music and Visual Arts are taught in English. 2. Innovative curriculum a. The English curriculum is a mix of local syllabus and American Literature, so as to allow smooth transition for students who plan to further their studies overseas. 3. Care for individuality a. Classes are streamed according to the student!|s English ability. Care for the S.1 Intakes 1. We organize orientation meetings for S.1 intakes and their parents to help them familiarize with the school and teachers. Good Public Examination Results Our first two batches of S.5 students (2008 and 2009) had obtained very good results in HKCEE. The passing rate of most subjects is over 90% and some even attaining 100%. Special Characteristics of Curriculum English Language United Christian College (Kowloon East) offers an exciting and attractive English Language curriculum on entry in S.1 that builds on students!| past knowledge of English while enabling learners to expand into the realms of language arts and literature in English. The former provides an enriching experience for students!| involvement in various genres, i.e. novels, poetry, debate and social concern that are language based in preparation for the TSA, SBA and challenges of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum (NSS). The latter facilitates learners with the scope of literary appreciation of human works that develop a humanistic outlook on life portraying diverse human thought, emotions and experience. Both language arts and literature in English challenge students with the opportunity to consider the Christian perspective in association with values and attitudes, critical thinking, collaborative skills and cultural enjoyment while targeting language enhancement. The English Department at UCCKE aims to establish a concrete curriculum framework, engage in curriculum planning and incorporate pedagogy and assessment through the use of learning and teaching resources with the support of specialists from the Curriculum Development Institute (CDI), an advisory arm of the Education, Bureau (EDB) in preparing students to excel in both the language arts and non-language arts electives of the NSS. We focus particularly on the chosen electives of one language art and two non-language arts modules of Short Stories, Debate and Social Issues, respectively. Students are encouraged to lay a firm foundation in internalizing the English language, along with raising one!|s cognitive awareness of how the language is used daily. Elective Part (Objectives)
Music UCCKE encourages students to appreciate music by requiring students to learn at least one musical instrument. All S.1 to S.3 students must choose a string instrument to play in class. There is no pre-requisite for taking the music class. The music teacher coaches a variety of string instruments. Each class is a string ensemble as students may choose from violin, viola, cello and bass. Japanese The main purpose of including a foreign language in the school curriculum is to widen the global view of students at a very young age. The three-year introductory Japanese course equips students with a brief understanding of the Japanese language and how it is applied in various scenarios. The syllabus covers the basic pronunciation of Japanese syllables, daily conversations, short articles and stories. Students are exposed to various graded listening, reading and writing exercises. Games, songs and video clips are supplements to motivate and sustain their interests. In order to attend to students' individual needs, tailor made audio recordings are uploaded to the school intranet for students to access outside their class time.
